Last Sunday, September 29, 2024, we celebrated Chuseok which is the Korean word for the Harvest Festival. It is also known as a mid-autumn harvest festival. Many countries in Asia that follow the lunar calendar celebrate this harvest festival.
In South Korea, Chuseok is a three-day national holiday. It traditionally is a time for people to visit their hometown and share a feast of traditional food. In the US, Canada, and other countries where Koreans have immigrated, Chuseok has taken on a different tradition, shaped by the immigrant experience.
Chuseok has become a celebration of the Korean immigrant experience. It is a time to celebrate the Korean culture.
For our Chuseok celebration, we had a delicious meal of Korean food and a cultural entertainment program that included performances on a kayageum which is a 1500 year-old traditional Korean string instrument, pansori singing which is a traditional Korean a capella, and a tai chi demonstration which is an ancient Chinese martial arts that spread to many other countries including Korea.
Next year, in 2025, Chuseok falls on Sunday, October 5 – Wednesday, October 8. Please join us next year in October for our Chuseok Celebration.
